Understanding Suicide Notes

Survivors of Suicide Loss Support Group - Madison, NJ

About 30-40% of the time a note may be found after a suicide. Unlike the movies or TV, the notes often do not provide a "why" for the survivors. The notes may range from clear and apparently lucid thoughts to random thoughts that don't make sense. It is important to remember that the person who wrote the note was about to end their life due to the pain they were feeling and the hopelessness they felt. It is estimated that 90% of those who die by suicide were struggling with some form of mental health issues. These issues may also be reflected in the notes that are left behind.
